Most wooden bed frames are on legs and not casters or wheels and are often higher than metal ones. Storage space is also included in some wooden bed frames with drawers under the bed either built in or removable. Some styles have beautifully carved posts at the corners for added decoration. Simple platform beds are low to the ground and can support either a futon or box spring. There are also four-poster wooden frames and sleigh beds with an outward curl on the tip of each end. The beautiful cherry, merlot, maple, rustic pine, antique white or oak finishes make inexpensive beds look rich and elegant.
The styles range from the simple classical to contemporary and modern and come in stacking beds for children's rooms to large platform beds in elegant styles. White painted wooden frames have been fashionable for decades and are just as popular today. Some have headboards and foot ends in styles such as Old English, Shaker and some only have headboards. Platform beds come in many different styles including Windsor platform, Manhattan platform and Murray platform. There are Captain's style with bookcase headboards and high sides which are great for children. They also include cribs and day beds.
Wooden bed frames can be costly but will last for years and can be used for generations. There are also veneers of hardwoods over less expensive wood that give the same impression as a solid frame. In the long run it is a good investment. A good quality child's bed can be later moved to a guest room. The costs have been greatly reduced lately because of the availability of sustainable wood from around the world. The sizes include double, twin, queen, king and California king and have headboards footboards, slats to support the mattress and side rails if needed. There are headboards that have inset faux or genuine leather as a style statement.
